Benefics and Malefics

Some Important Considerations

1. a) Natural benefics as lords of the quadrants (1,4,7,10 houses) lose their beneficence. Natural malefics as lords of (1,4,7,10 houses) also lose their malefic nature.
2. b) Lord of the trines (1,5,9 houses) give benefic results irrespective of their inherent nature. 
3. c) Lords of the third, the sixth and the eleventh house are always malefic.
4. d) The lords of the second, the eighth and the twelfth are neutrals. They give results based on their location and influences on them.
5. e) Amidst the quadrants, the fourth lord is more powerful than lagna, seventh lord is more powerful than fourth lord, tenth lord is more powerful than seventh lord.
6. f) Amidst the trines, the fifth lord is more powerful than lagna lord, the ninth lord is more powerful than the fifth lord. 
7. g) Amidst the 3,6,11 group, the sixth lord is more powerful than the third lord and the eleventh lord is more powerful than the sixth lord. 
8. h) Amidst the 2,8,12 group, the eighth lord is more powerful than the second lord and the twelfth lord is more powerful than the eighth lord.
9. i) The eighth lord, though considered to be neutral, has great propensity to do evil as it is the twelfth lord from the ninth house (fortune). Therefore, it can cause obstacles, failures, ailments, death etc.
10. j) The eighth lord is still more malefic if it is also the lord of the third or the eleventh lord. Like Venus in Pisces lagna, Mars in Virgo lagna, Jupiter in Taurus lagna and Mercury in Scorpio lagna.
11. k) The eighth lord becomes a benefic planet when it also owns a trine like Jupiter and Mercury in Leo and Aquarius lagna. For Gemini lagna, Saturn as lord of the eighth house and the ninth house gives mixed results.
12. l) The blemish of the eighth lordship does not apply to the Sun and the Moon. However, practically this doesn’t hold good. Especially for longevity and other considerations.
13. m) When a planet owns both a quadrant and the trine, it becomes Rajya-Yoga-Karaka (doer of great benefit). It becomes especially more effective if such a planet is placed in quadrant or trine. 
14. n) Only the ownership of the quadrant doesn’t make any malefic planet as benefic, the planet should also own a trine to get rid of its malefic nature completely.
15. o) The blemish of kendra lordship, as applicable to benefics increases progressively from the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus.
16. p) The Full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, in this order, are more powerful as benefics.
17. q) The Waning Moon, Sun, Saturn and Mars, in this order, are more powerful as malefics.
18. r) If the lord of a quadrant is in any way related to the lord of the trine, a Rajya yoga is formed. This can occur by various means like conjunction of the lord of the quadrant with lord of the trine, by mutual aspect, by placement of lord of quadrant in trine or vice-versa, by exchange of houses (Parivatan Yoga), when one is placed in other’s house and this latter aspect the former. Planets involved in Rajya yoga generally give good results.
19. s) Rahu and Ketu give results based on the house where it is located and according to the planet whom they join. Rahu and Ketu can give yogakaraka results when they are placed in the quadrant, and join a trine lord or when they are placed in trine with the lord of the quadrant. Rahu also behaves as Saturn and Ketu as Mars.

Aries Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

The lagna lord Mars, the fifth lord Sun and the ninth lord Jupiter can be considered to be benefic. Out of which Jupiter can be considered to be most benefic as it rules over the house of fortune. The fifth lord Sun is the second most benefic planet for this ascendant as it rules over the crucial trine i.e., the fifth house. The Lagna lord is always considered benefic but the eighth lordship of Mars can cause some difficulties as well. Moon is also a benefic planet for Aries Ascendant, as Moon happens to be the fourth lord in the horoscope and friend of lagna lord Mars.

Functional Malefic:

Mercury happens to be the most malefic planet for Aries Ascendant as it is the lord of the third and the sixth house. Rahu and Ketu are generally malefic for this ascendant. 

Neutral: 

Venus which happens to be the lord of the second and the seventh lord in the horoscope can be considered as neutral. Saturn which happens to be the lord of the tenth and the eleventh lord in the horoscope can also be considered neutral.

Taurus Ascendant

Functional Benefic: 

The most benefic planet for this Ascendant is Saturn as it is the Yogakaraka planet for this ascendant. Yogakaraka planet is one which has lordship of both Kendra and Trine. This makes the planet highly beneficial. The other benefic planets for this ascendant are Mercury and Venus. Venus also has the lordship of the malefic sixth lord. It is likely that Venus may also test the native quite often. 

Functional Malefic:

Jupiter is the most malefic planet for this ascendant as Jupiter’s Mooltrikona sign is placed in the eighth house from Taurus sign. Apart from this the lord of the seventh and the twelfth house i.e., Mars is also functional malefic. Moon which happens to be the lord of the third house can also be considered to be functional malefic. Rahu and Ketu can act malefic if it is ill-placed.

Neutral:

Sun the lord of the fourth house from the ascendant can be considered as neutral.

Gemini Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

The lord of the fifth lord Venus is the biggest benefic for this ascendant as it is the lord of the fifth house and also friendly to the lagna lord Mercury. Saturn has benefic ninth lordship. Hence, it can be considered to be beneficial. However, the eighth lordship can cause problems. But, as the Mooltrikona sign is Aquarius which is rising in the ninth house, it is likely that Venus can give good results. 

Functional Malefic:

Mars is the most malefic planet for this ascendant as it rules over the eighth house and the eleventh house in the horoscope. Jupiter and the Sun are also malefic for this ascendant. Rahu and Ketu can also act as malefic depending upon its placement. 

Neutral:

Mercury and Moon can be considered as neutral. Though Mercury happens to be the lord of the lagna, it suffers from Kendra-Adhipati dosha. Hence, it should be seen as a neutral planet.

Cancer Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

Mars is the most auspicious planet for this ascendant as it happens to be the lord of the fifth and the tenth house making it a yogakaraka planet. Moon happens to be the benefic lagna lord, hence it is a strong benefic. 

Functional Malefic:

Jupiter has the lordship of the sixth house and the ninth house. However, as its Mooltrikona sign is in the sixth house. It can be considered as a malefic planet. Saturn which is the eighth lord and Mercury which happens to be the twelfth lord are also malefic for this ascendant.

Neutral:

Venus which happens to be the lord of the fourth and the eleventh house and Sun which is the second lord are neutral. Rahu and Ketu can also act as neutral if not afflicted.

Leo Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

Sun the lagna lord, Mars which happens to be the lord of the fourth and the ninth house are most benefic planets. Jupiter happens to be the lord on the fifth house and the eighth house. The Mooltrikona of Jupiter is in the benefic fifth house; therefore, it can be called a benefic planet. 

Functional Malefic:

Moon the twelfth house, Mercury which happens to be the second and the eleventh lord can be a giver of wealth but can cause other problems. Mercury can be considered to be functional malefic. Venus which happens to be the third lord and the tenth lord is also a malefic planet because of classical definition as Venus is an enemy of Sun the lagna lord. Though, Venus can give business and career growth. 

Neutral:

Saturn which happens to be the sixth and the seventh house and whose Mooltrikona sign is in Kendra can be considered as Neutral to this ascendant. 

Virgo Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

Venus which happens to be the lord of the second and the ninth house is the most beneficial planet for this Ascendant. 

Functional Malefic:

The most malefic planet for this ascendant is Mars which happens to be the lord of the third and the eighth house. Jupiter though is having lordship of the fourth and the seventh house is suffering from Kendra-Adhipati yoga and is also enemy of lagna lord Mercury. Hence, Jupiter can be considered a malefic planet. Moon happens to be the lord of the eleventh house is inimical to Mercury the lagna lord. Hence, the Moon can also be considered malefic. Rahu and Ketu are also malefic especially if ill-placed.

Neutral:

Mercury happens to own two benefic houses, the lagna and the tenth house. However, it suffers from Kendra-Adhipati dosha. Sun is the lord of the twelfth house. But it has no enmity with the lagna lord Mercury. Hence, Sun can be considered to be neutral in Virgo lagna. 

Libra Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

The most benefic planet for this ascendant is Saturn which happens to be the lord of the fourth and the fifth house, which happens to be the yogakaraka planet. Mercury happens to be the lord of the ninth house and the twelfth house. The ninth lordship of Mercury makes it a functional benefic. Venus can also be considered to be a benefic planet as it is the lagna lord and its Mooltrikona sign is lagna itself. However, the eighth lordship of Venus can cause some issues.

Saturn happens to be the lord of the third and the fourth house. The Mooltrikona of Saturn is in Kendra. Hence, Saturn can also be considered as a neutral planet.

Sagittarius Ascendant

Mars Mooltrikona sign is placed in the fifth house from the ascendant. Therefore, Mars can be considered as a benefic planet for this ascendant. Sun happens to be the ninth lord in the horoscope. Hence, the Sun can be considered to be the most benefic planet for this ascendant.

Moon is the lord of the eighth house of the horoscope. However, as the blemish of the eighth lordship doesn’t apply to the Moon, it can be considered to be a neutral planet. Jupiter is the benefic lagna lord. However, as Jupiter is involved in Kendra-Adhipati dosha it can be considered to be a neutral planet.

Capricorn Ascendant

Functional Benefic:

Venus which happens to be the lord of the fifth house and the tenth house which means lord of one Kendra and one Trikona. This makes Venus a yogakaraka planet. Therefore, Venus is the most benefic planet for this ascendant. Mercury happens to be the lord of the sixth house and the lord of the ninth house in the horoscope. The Mooltrikona of Mercury is in the ninth house. Hence, Mercury can be considered as a benefic planet. Saturn is the lord of the lagna and the second house. It can be considered as a benefic planet for this ascendant.
